The digital-to-analogue converter is where a stored or streamed file becomes a signal your amplifier can use, and it does more to determine the character of a digital system than almost anything else in it. Fundipoint imports high-end DACs into South Africa from five of the brands we distribute.

DAC brands we import

  • dCS — the Ring DAC, dCS’s own patented converter technology, developed because conventional approaches had reached the limit of what they could practically achieve. Its strength is linearity at the low signal levels where other converters struggle.
  • Mola Mola — Tambaqui, and the same conversion available as an optional board inside the Makua preamplifier.
  • Ayre Acoustics — digital conversion and headphone amplification within a full line of audio components.
  • Aesthetix — the Romulus, a DSD DAC and CD player in a single chassis.
  • Audioengine — the D3, a compact DAC and headphone amplifier.

Where the DAC sits

Those stages are not always separate boxes. Some streamers convert internally, some preamplifiers take a DAC board, and active speakers such as Devialet Phantom collapse several stages into one unit. Buying a standalone DAC makes sense when you want to choose the converter independently of everything else, or upgrade it on its own later.

Several of these are relevant to headphones as well as speakers — the Ayre and Audioengine products above include headphone amplification, and dCS’s range extends to headphone use.
